How do skin peels work?
Skin peels – sometimes also referred to as ‘chemical’ peels – work by exfoliating your skin using a chemical solution. This solution removes the dead and dull top layers of your skin cells to reveal new, healthy cells underneath. Skin peels also stimulate skin cell renewal, and collagen and elastin production.
You will hear aesthetic practitioners talking about different depths of skin peels: superficial, moderate, and deep. The deeper the peel, the further into the epidermal and dermal layers it will penetrate.
Skin peels can improve the appearance of fine lines, elasticity and skin tone, pigmentation and acne.
What skin peels do you offer?
We currently offer The Perfect Peel or Epiderma 5’s AHA 40 (40% Glycolic) or AHA 70 (70% Glycolic) Peels at Aesthetic Nursing Services, all of which are leading skin peels with a tried and tested safety record and incredible results.
The Perfect Peel by Medica Forte is a revolutionary peel that will transform your skin in just one week. This peel is popular because it can be used on all skin types, needs no pre-peel skin preparation, takes less than 15 minutes to apply and is virtually pain-free.
The Perfect Peel contains a key anti-ageing ingredient – Glutathione – which has never been used in chemical peels before. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that can help clear your skin of free radicals and toxins that cause hyperpigmentation and sun spots, leaving you with a more even complexion.
This peel can improve the overall tone and texture of your skin, lighten and brighten your skin, remove or reduce sun damage and age spots, reduce pore size and soften fine lines and wrinkles, reduce or eliminate hyperpigmentation and acne scars, improve acne skin conditions and melasma, stimulate the production of collagen resulting in firmer skin, slow down the ageing process and help prevent wrinkles.
The Epiderma5 skincare range includes a 40% glycolic peel, which has been developed to provide a good level of exfoliation without causing damage to your skin. There is little to no peeling with this product, which blends cosmeceutical and natural ingredients to provide a balance of active ingredients, botanicals, and essential oils. It is suitable for all skin types, offers a comfortable treatment, instant results, no pre-peel skin preparation, and a predictable outcome.
The Epiderma 5 AHA 40 peel is non-irritating and ideal if you have acne and oily skin, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, dull complexion, large pores or dry skin.
- Epiderma5’s AHA 70 Peel
If you would like a deeper exfoliating peel, Epiderma5 has recently launched a 70% glycolic acid peel that is only available through qualified medical professionals. This peel is ideal if you have very damaged, ageing or pigmented skin.
Definisse Classic Peel allows a multi-level synergistic action due to the main components of Salicylic acid, Pyruvic acid and Retinoic acid. These acids target the skin at different depths having antimicrobial and sego-regulatory properties and promising skin cell proliferation. Effectively treating photo-ageing, superficial wrinkles, acne imperfections. Giving smoother more radiant skin.
Definisse Lightening Peel again contains Salicylic, Pyruvic and Retinoic acids to allow a synergistic action. It also contains Lumiskin and Sepiwhite which both have anti pigmentation properties.
Are chemical peels safe?
Chemical peels have been used by dermatologists and aesthetic medical professionals for more than 50 years with an excellent safety record. Superficial and moderate peels, in particular, are well tolerated and carry fewer risks of side effects than deeper peels.
What are the side effects?
A few hours after a superficial or moderate skin peel, your skin may look red or feel slightly sunburnt, but this should resolve within a few days; some people develop a blotchy appearance and white patches of skin that take a couple of hours to fade. Once any redness or blotchiness subsides, you may experience some mild peeling, particularly after The Perfect Peel. Peeling is unlikely with the Epiderma5 peels.
Some people are allergic to the chemicals used in skin peels – if you have any allergies, please do discuss this with us at your initial consultation.
A side effect of superficial peels can be hyperpigmentation (brown blotches on the skin); wearing a high factor sunscreen can help to reduce the potential for this problem. In rare cases, skin peels have caused an outbreak of cold sores in people who have a history of such complaints. If you are a cold sore sufferer, let us know in advance as we can prescribe anti-viral medication to prevent an outbreak.
BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT
Is there anything I should do before I come in for the treatment?
Before you decide whether a skin peel is the right treatment for you and which peel would be best for your needs, we will ask you to come into Aesthetic Nursing Services for a no-obligation consultation. During this initial appointment, we will take a full medical history and spend time with you getting to know you and how you feel about specific aspects of your appearance. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and for us to make sure that you understand all of your treatment options and have realistic expectations for the outcomes of your treatment.
If we feel your skin would benefit from some pre-peel preparation, we will give you the right products and directions about how and when to use them at this stage.
DURING YOUR TREATMENT
What happens during a skin peel treatment?
When you come to us for a skin peel, the procedure may differ slightly depending on which peel you have.
Generally speaking, we will cleanse your skin before applying the peel solution. With a glycolic peel, we will leave it for an appropriate length of time before washing the solution off and neutralising your skin. With The Perfect Peel, you can leave and go on with your day while the peel gets to work. You will simply need to wash the peel off as directed at home.
To follow The Perfect Peel, we will give you an individual home treatment pack, which contains retinol wipes and a vitamin C moisturiser to assist the healing process and enhance your results.
AFTER YOUR TREATMENT
How long will the results last?
You should be able to see the results of your treatment straight away, although some improvements are likely over the next few weeks as a result of skin cell renewal and collagen production.
With The Perfect Peel, you may need a series of two to three treatments applied once every four weeks to best treatment skin conditions such as melasma and active acne. For less severe conditions, many people opt to have a Perfect Peel two or three times a year.
The results of the Epiderma5 peel will typically last for four to six weeks.
What happens after the treatment?
When you have a skin peel at Aesthetic Nursing Services, we will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help you enjoy a complication-free recovery and the best outcomes. We may recommend that you:
- Wash your face gently with a soap-free cleanser, pat the skin dry with a towel, and moisturise twice a day
- Avoid picking at any peeling skin
- Wear a high factor sunscreen for at least six weeks post-treatment
- Contact us immediately if you notice any signs of infection or pigment changes
