Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are commonly used in our late 20s and beyond. In our teens and 20s, most of us take our beautiful, youthful skin for granted. It looks and feels naturally firm, has just the right amount of definition, and shows very few signs of damage, although acne can be a problem during these younger years.

From our late 20s onwards, the building blocks that give us our youthful skin begin to deplete; hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin, and fatty tissues become less abundant and, as a result, our skin starts to show the first signs of ageing and sun damage. You may notice wrinkles starting to appear around your nose and mouth or shadows below your eyes – this is caused by a loss of volume.

Dermal fillers are an injectable treatment designed to temporarily restore the lost volume within your skin by using a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid, a volumising carbohydrate that is found in the connective tissues of our body. This treatment is most effective for smoothing out and filling static lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers FAQs

How do dermal fillers work?

There are several types of dermal fillers, but the ones we use at Aesthetic Nursing Services are all hyaluronic acid-based fillers. As explained above, hyaluronic acid is one of the building blocks of healthy, youthful-looking skin; it is a carbohydrate that is found in the connective tissues of the human body, including our joints and eyeballs, to create volume and provide an all-important cushioning effect.

From our 20s onwards, our natural stores of hyaluronic acid start to break down, which eventually contributes to lines and wrinkles, and can make our skin look and feel less hydrated. The dermal fillers we offer use a biosynthetic version of hyaluronic acid that temporarily adds volume back into the skin. Over time, this hyaluronic acid breaks down and is safely absorbed by your body.

Are dermal fillers safe?

At Aesthetic Nursing Services, we use some of the world’s leading brands of dermal fillers, including  Juvederm, Belotero,  Teosyal,  Restylane and Revanesse. These products are FDA-approved and supported by extensive clinical studies and a well-established safety record.

Something else that sets Aesthetic Nursing Services apart from many other aesthetics clinics is that we administer most filler procedures using a micro-cannula instead of a micro-needle. The use of a cannula – which is a very thin and flexible hollow tube with a smooth round tip – reduces bruising and discomfort, and is recognised as safer than using needles because it causes less bleeding, swelling or tissue trauma.

Although dermal fillers are not currently treated as prescription-only medication, they should always be administered by an experienced medical professional who can help you achieve a natural finish rather than making your features look overdone and overfilled.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects of dermal fillers are temporary bleeding, mild swelling, redness or bruising at the injection site, which can take two to three days to vanish.

In rare cases, people have reported an allergic reaction to dermal fillers with side effects such as prolonged redness, swelling, itching, hardness and/or bumps in the skin, typically at the injections sites. These symptoms can last for several months but are extremely unusual.

If you have a history of cold sores, dermal fillers can cause an outbreak. Let us know in advance and we may be able to recommend or prescribe a preventative course of medication.

Worldwide, some people have reported delayed side effects many months after their first treatment – usually in the form of red lumps under the skin – but they tend to be associated with permanent fillers, rather than temporary hyaluronic acid fillers.

In a study published in 2012, 17 patients worldwide had reported going blind after cosmetic injection procedures, including some hyaluronic acid injections, because of incorrect placement of the product. Although such side effects are rare, it is essential to see an experienced practitioner to ensure the best outcomes.

BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT

Is there anything I should do before I come in for the treatment?

Before you decide whether this is the right treatment for you, we will ask you to come into Aesthetic Nursing Services for a no-obligation consultation. During this initial appointment, we will take a full medical history and spend time with you getting to know you and how you feel about specific aspects of your appearance. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions and for us to make sure that you understand all of your treatment options and have realistic expectations for the outcomes.

You might also want to take arnica tablets for a few days before having dermal fillers, as there is some evidence to suggest that this can help minimise any bruising.

DURING YOUR TREATMENT

What happens during a treatment with dermal fillers?

When you come into the clinic for a dermal fillers treatment, we will thoroughly clean your skin. If you are worried about how the injections will feel, we can apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the treatment area, although some dermal fillers include lidocaine which provides instant relief from any discomfort. To reassure you, most people find dermal fillers surprisingly comfortable because we use tiny needles and small amounts of the product.

At this point, we will use micro needles and disposable, one-use only syringes to inject small amounts of the product into several points in the treatment area. We may suggest that you only have a single area treated initially to see how you respond to the injections.

The treatment should only take 15-30 minutes, and most people find that they are able to carry straight on with their daily routine without any recovery time. If you feel your face looks a bit bruised, you may want to take things easy and relax until the bruising subsides.

AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

How long will the results last?

You should be able to see the results of your treatment straight away, although some improvements are likely over the next few days as the fillers fully settle. Our aim is to enhance your natural beauty and make you look rested and rejuvenated without overfilling your face.

How long the results last will depend on the dermal filler used, the area treated, the dose used, and how your body responds to the treatment. Most people find that they need top-up treatments every four to 12 months to maintain and even improve upon the initial outcomes.

What happens after the treatment?

When you have a treatment at Aesthetic Nursing Services, we will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help you enjoy a complication-free recovery and the best outcomes.

With dermal fillers, we will typically advise you to:

  • Use iced water soaks or ice packs to help reduce any swelling (although this isn’t usually necessary)
  • Use painkillers such as paracetamol, if required, to manage any tenderness
  • Take arnica tablets or apply arnica cream for several days post-treatment to reduce bruising
  • Contact us immediately if you experience painful swelling, bruising, or if any blistering occurs
  • Contact us if you experience any delayed reactions to your treatment, such as red lumps

We will usually ask you to come back to the clinic after two weeks so that we can check the outcomes of your treatment, and make sure that you and we are happy with how everything went.

Where is your clinic?

Our clinic is based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. We have a strong customer base and many of our customers travel to us from Beaconsfield, Marlow, Maidenhead, Chalfont and Amersham as well as other areas across the South-East.
